Description

Barcelona is a coastal city in Spain, bordering the Mediterranean Sea and located in the north-eastern part of the country, quite close to the border with France (180 km). It is the second largest city in the country after Madrid and is the capital and largest city of the autonomous region of Catalonia. In fact, with the population of its metropolitan area reaching 4.8 million inhabitants, it is the 5th most populous urban area in Europe after that of Paris, the Ruhr in West Germany, Madrid and Milan. The city's name is derived from the ancient Iberian "Baŕkeno" (Barquinon) which refers to a settlement that probably existed in the area in the 3rd century BC. The first signs of habitation in the area date back to the 5th millennium BC, In 15 BC it was re-founded and rebuilt as a Roman town and castle on a small hill in what is now the historic centre (Mont Taber). From 801 to 1137 it was the capital of the Independent County of Barcelona. In 1137 it was united with the Kingdom of Aragon and until the 15th century it was the most important economic centre of the Kingdom. In 1469 after the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon to Isabella of Castile, Barcelona came under the Spanish Monarchy, and went through its first separatist rebellions as early as 1640. During the Napoleonic wars (1807-1814) it suffered many disasters, but then followed a period of growth, getting on the Industrial Revolution train early on.

The vibrant capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is a stunning seaside city that flaunts its beauty and sunny lifestyle. Its beautiful scenery, magnificent architecture and wonderful cultural attractions make it an attractive destination. Of course, the swampy Mediterranean climate adds to the charm. Barcelona has an atmospheric medieval quarter, the Barri Gòtic, with an almost magical old-world atmosphere, but it is even more famous for its modernist architecture. Antoni Gaudí left a lasting mark on Barcelona with his pioneering surrealist buildings; some of which are listed on UNESCO. After all the sightseeing, tourists will just want to relax and enjoy the joyful atmosphere of the city. Take a stroll down La Rambla, where the locals are out and about. Escape to the sandy beaches near the port and relax over leisurely meals on outdoor terraces. Wander aimlessly and find hidden city squares where street musicians sing tunes on Spanish guitars. Amazing surprises abound at every turn.
