Popis

Morocco, a colourful country, with modern but also medieval cities, beautiful gardens,

high mountains and vast desert.

This country at the northwestern tip of Africa seems to be particularly fond of myths.

According to Moroccan tradition, the Greek-born demigod named Hercules

chose the site where modern-day Morocco now stretches to perform another of his feats.

Holding Europe with one hand and Africa with the other, he let pass the European continent.

the salt water of the Atlantic between them and thus the Mediterranean was born. The

where the "scar" remained he called it Gibraltar and the new land that spread out

further south he called it Morocco. On one side, the new country overlooked the frozen

Atlantic and on the other the new sea, while to the east it bordered Algeria and

to the south with Mauritania. So that the natives would not be lonely, Hercules brought them

new inhabitants from Mali and Sudan, and thus the first Berbers were born, and soon afterwards the first

the first caravans from Israel arrived there, forming the largest

the largest Jewish community in the world.

Day 3: MARRAKES: guided tour Situated at a crossroads of major trade routes, between the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara and the vastness of the southern regions, Marrakech is the "red city", the capital of the South and the third largest city in the country. During our tour we will admire the city walls, the Bahia Palace, the Mazorel Gardens and the Saadi tombs. Marrakech is also home to some of the most magnificent buildings in the whole of Morocco, such as the famous mosque with its impressive Qutubia minaret, named after the small book sellers who sat outside (Qutub in Arabic means "books"). We'll visit the labyrinthine souks and, of course, the legendary central Jemaa el-Fna square, which is the largest market square in the Arab world. For many centuries this city was a renowned commercial centre. Berber and Arab nomads and natives from nearby Mount Atlas flocked to the chaotic central square, Gemaa el Fna, while merchants from Timbuktu, Egypt and Europe came to trade cotton gold silver, slaves and spices. Today it seems little has changed and shopping is always a good reason to visit the Medina of Marrakech, that is, the Old Quarter. We will be caught up in the maze of this area and in the dark narrow streets, where the sky is hidden behind carpets hanging from above, we will mingle with the numerous vendors, jugglers, gnawa musicians, druggists and we will be seduced by the peddlers and skilful traders who are crowded side by side selling everything from traditional bamboos (brightly coloured yellow slippers) to decorative iron lanterns. If you're a spice and herb lover, you'll find the most sophisticated and hard-to-find spices in their markets. Herbalists offer elixirs and lotions that cure all ailments. They offer black scorpions, bottles of leeches, and even dried chameleons for medicinal use.

Breakfast at the hotel and we set off for a full day excursion to the seaside town of Essaouira. Essaouira is a town dressed in blue, which today has become an important centre of Moroccan artistic creation, with many painters and artists. Climb up to the castle to enjoy the view of the ocean. In the area of Essaouira and Marrakech grow the clay trees from which the very expensive argan oil is extracted. Time permitting, we will visit a cooperative of women who process argan on our way. At the end of our visit we return to Marrakech.

Day 5: Marakes: excursion to the mountain range of Marakes Atlas - Ouarzazat - Ait Ben Hadou

No trip to Morocco is complete without mixing with the desert. The country becomes even more exotic and otherworldly when you wander through the stunning landscapes of the vast dunes. And it is this unique experience that Versus offers on this trip. So today's tour takes us through the Atlas Mountains, the largest mountain range in North Africa, which divides Morocco in two. It is home exclusively to the Berbers, the indigenous inhabitants of the country. The road we will travel along was originally built by the French Foreign Legion and will take us to the Tisine Tisca road crossing, at an altitude of 2,260 metres, passing through the Berber town of Tadart and overlooking landscapes of wild beauty. We arrive in Ouarzazate, which stretches across the centre of a desert plateau and was founded by French legionnaires in 1920. The town's most important attraction is the Tauride Casbah, a mansion used both in the past by the Southern Pasha, Glaoui, and more recently by many film productions. On the way back, we come to the fortified village of Ait Ben Hadou - protected by UNESCO - with its characteristic brick castles, an incredible representative of the warlike past of the many different tribes of southern Morocco. The reddish-brown castle town of Qasbah, perched on the hillside, is disconcertingly familiar, since the most magnificent city that has or ever will exist, the spectacular Qarth in Game of Thrones, was actually Ait Ben Hadou. We'll climb to the highest point of the castle, zigzagging through its winding dirt streets between the low reddish-brown houses, to admire the stunning views of the impressive palm grove on one side and the vastness of the desert on the other. Full of sights and smells, we will return to our hotel in Marrakech. Overnight stay.

Day 6: MARACES: excursion to Agafay
Day 6: MARACES: excursion to Agafay

Day 6: MARACES: excursion to Agafay.

Breakfast at the hotel and free time to stroll around Medina, the historical centre of the city. See mosques and magnificent gardens, such as that of Yves Saint Laurent, palaces and museums. Shop for wonderful Berber carpets, bronzes, silver jewellery and try traditional aromatic tea. At noon we will depart for Agafay, in the desert, about thirty kilometres south of Marrakech. This is a rocky desert of white dunes stretching over several hundred acres. In the middle of the desert is a stunning oasis, a haven of peace and tranquility, fauna and flora, and "lost" in the dunes are still some Berber villages that continue to live in this austere but magnificent nature. Here, you will be able to enjoy various activities of your choice (individual costs) before our return to Marrakech. Dinner & overnight.
