Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean and is just a 20-minute flight from the coast of Tanzania. Stone Town, the capital, has a strong Arabic element and was the spice centre and main slave market on the East Coast. The fascinating old town is a maze of narrow streets, stately houses and colourful spice markets. To the north and south of Unguya, the main island of Zanzibar, are the islands of Pemba and Mafia, which offer excellent diving and are the perfect destination for those who want to relax. The south coast of Zanzibar is more rugged, with miles of pristine beaches, spectacular coastal forests, estuaries and ancient Arab settlements.
"The warm Indian ocean makes Zanzibar a perfect relaxing getaway, and a stunning change of scenery from Tanzania's game reserves and national parks." one of our East Africa Experts
