Description

Alsace

Alsace is the German-speaking region of France. It is a region located on the west bank of the Rhine River, between the Rhine and the Vosges Mountains. To the north and east it shares a border with Germany; to the south with German-speaking Switzerland; and to the west with Lorraine and Franche Comté. Historically speaking, Alsace was part of the German-speaking region of Central Europe, and to this day a large part of the population, of all generations, speaks or understands Alsatian, a dialectal form of German that is very similar to the German spoken in Switzerland. Over the last two centuries, Alsatian has passed from Germany to France and back and back again. Consequently, it is a region that was not part of France at the time of the modern nation's creation, and it held a number of institutional differences, particularly in terms of religious affairs. For example, Good Friday is a holiday in Alsace, but not in the rest of France. And in Alsace, priests are paid by the state.

Strasbourg

Strasbourg, almost on the western banks of the Rhine, is the capital of the lesser province of Alsace and the co-capital of the European Parliament after Brussels. It is also home to the European Court of Human Rights and the Council of Europe. The Ill River runs through it, while the historic centre, also called "Little France", is beautiful thanks to its canals, wooden houses and traditional Alsatian winstubs. Strasbourg is a quaint old town, a Unesco monument. The Rhine tributary, Ill, sets up a canal canal in the historic centre of Strasbourg with its old neighbourhoods of fishermen, millers and tanners. Pink, salmon, orange, the facades of 16th and 17th century houses, trailing on the water rival the flowers on the ledges in a riot of colour. Wander through the Grande Ill, the heart of the medieval old town. Important museums, open-air markets, restaurants with authentic Alsatian flavours, lively night spots delight travellers.
